The holiday season can be a time of great joy or great sadness.  If you have a friend or loved one who is coping with a job loss, death, serious illness, or home foreclosure, it can be hard to know how to help.

These tips from the authors of Overcomers Inc: True stories of hope, courage, and inspiration will help.

1. Be sensitive to your loved ones’ limited financial resources. If your brother’s just lost his job, bragging about your holiday ski trip would be cruel.  Instead, suggest low-cost or free holiday gift suggestions so that everyone can participate, even if money is tight.
2. For the recently widowed or others who are in mourning, don’t avoid mentioning the departed family member. Gently reminisce about favorite family memories.  It’s better to speak of the departed that to carefully avoid all mention of his or name.  Follow the lead of the person in grief.  If the discussion is too difficult, she will change the subject.  Many times, the widow or widower will appreciate the chance to share a memory of the lost loved one.
3. Allow people to have their space, but watch out for isolation.  Stress and grief can be exhausting.  Your friend or family member may not be up to the traditional all day shopping trip or noisy holiday party.  Let her set the pace.  However, if you sense that your loved one is withdrawing from everything, consider stopping by for a quiet visit or a cup of tea.  Loneliness is most acute during the holidays so some extra loving care will be very helpful.
4. Invite your loved one to an uplifting community activity.  Holiday concerts, drives to see colored lights, and religious activities can be a source of connection and enjoyment.  It’s hard to not to smile when you see a child’s joy or a humorous holiday play.  Fun is often in short supply, especially when things are hard.  Strive to bring some joy to your loved one and increase their contact with their community.
5. Be patient and understanding.  Your efforts to bring joy and comfort will be appreciated, even if your hurting loved one can’t express that gratitude right at the moment.  A person dealing with a serious life challenge can be emotionally fragile so be gentle, encouraging, and present.  That understanding is the best possible gift you can provide.

What the heck is going on here?  I just read the headline… “Obama goes back to school” Contained in the first few lines… “But some parents and conservatives are blasting the president, calling the speech an excuse to brainwash American children.”  Seriously? Are we really that far gone here in the U.S.? Regardless of political affiliations, regardless of gender, race, age, etc… are we really to the point that we’re worried about having our children in the front of a TV or computer listening to an address by the President of The United States? Wow… I’m beside myself with confusion, frustration and just plain disbelief. Let me share a few of the most popular news headlines online as I write this;

As a country, parent, or adult, we’re more worried about our children being brainwashed during an address by the President than we are concerned about what has become the ‘norm’ in the news, on television, in the movies, down the street, or just about anywhere else you look. Rape and Kidnapping, Affairs, Corporate Scandals, Drugs, Mass Murder, Grown men biting off fingers because they disagree on a point, and on and on…

The people voicing their opinion on this are so upset with this planned address that some parents are even going so far as calling their school districts to complain and/or are even pulling their kids out of school for the address.  Where is this type of passion for the things that are really going on out there? Since when are we afraid of letting our children listen to one of the leaders of our country?  Why do we continually allow ourselves to follow the loudest voice, rather than the most reasonable or sensible ideals.

Step out of your political party shoes, remove whatever blinders you currently use to view the world, and try going barefoot for a while. We all are ONE, this isn’t an opinion, it’s a scientific fact! From the air we breathe to the cars we drive and the stars we see, there is no separation. Let’s stop putting up more and more barriers to this truth and face the facts.

We have a choice today and everyday. We can either stand by and let our world continue to slip further into the abyss allowing those with impaired vision to control the ship while we pretend we are powerless. Or, we can pull our collective heads out of the sand and let our voices be heard. I hope that you’ve gathered by now that this isn’t about a Presidential address; it’s about a better future for all of us. Allowing nonsensical, misguided ideals and beliefs to become the norm is unacceptable. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but don’t let someone else decide for you or your children what’s best for your future.

Like most people I’m sure there are times that you question yourself on the reasons why you work so hard doing the things you don’t enjoy. And like most of us we all have hundreds of “reasons” that we can come up with and convince ourselves, but you and I both know deep down its still not what we should be doing.

I believe one of the main reasons we feel this way is because we know deep inside or at a more spiritual level that we have a much larger and deeper mission here.

When we spend our hours, weeks, months and years in pursuits that aren’t fulfilling we eventually start to ask the questions of ourselves. At some point as we either ignore or set aside these questions we again settle into our lives until a day, week, month or year later when it pops back up to give us another chance at a more meaningful life.

The brain is amazing and can come up with any number of reasons as to ‘why’ we do what we do, however its never quite smart enough to outwit our hearts.

So why do you remain in that job/relationship/house/etc when you know at a higher level you are great and need to shine?

We all have an inner entrepreneur, a voice within that hands out business advice to us all the time. “Purchase this low and sell it high”, or “what a fantastic home investment”, or “that would be a great business idea, I wonder if anyone has thought of that.” There’s no shortage of business ideas, new creative insight or improved ways of getting things done. Now with the Internet new businesses and ideas can be launched overnight with just a few hours of work.

So why then isn’t everyone in business for themselves? Has everything that’s going to be invented or improved upon already been done? Of course we all know the answer to that is a big fat NO! One of the many reasons lies in the fact that, although we all have access to the entrepreneur within, very few of us actually listen to it. Rather than heed the advice of our internal entrepreneur we instead take the ’safe’ and ’secure’ route. Or at least what appears to us at the time a safe and secure route.

All of us at one time or another have encountered some type of negativity or have been criticized when we have put ourselves out there with some new idea, creation or invention. For some it’s hard to once again stick yourself out there and face the world again. Then there are others who have really gone out on a limb and started a business, failed, and are now off on another path so as not to risk failing again.

With every situation, every choice, every decision point each of us has the opportunity to connect to our inner entrepreneur. We all have talents, gifts, abundance and ideas to share with each other here. Don’t hesitate to share what you have or what you feel inspired to do. Without your idea, business or talent we may just have to wait another lifetime for your insight.

I believe that every single problem, crisis and dilemma that humanity faces today already has an answer. The answer lies within an individual or group of individuals however, and many of them are far from the path of discovery. As each of us goes against our true nature, or purpose, we lose sight of the shoreline of our calling. Are you on the right path? Do you know what your true purpose in life is? The answer to the second question is a definite Yes! Now it’s up to you to align your life with it and be able to answer the first question with a profound Yes as well.

If each of us just takes the time, listens to the entrepreneur within and follows our dreams, passions and purpose we may just find that the hard work, perseverance and failure to give up, even in the toughest of times, will place us further along our life path on this human journey. And who knows, you may just have the answer to one of the greatest problems facing mankind just waiting to be invented. Take action today!

You have the power of creation. Place yourself in line with the Universe and create the life which you are meant to live.
