You’ve Got to Find What You Love

This is the text of the Commencement address by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, delivered on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?” They said: “Of course.” My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents’ savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn’t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn’t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn’t all romantic. I didn’t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends’ rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn’t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn’t know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down – that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple’s current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I’m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn’t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn’t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I’m fine now.

This was the closest I’ve been to facing death, and I hope its the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960’s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: “Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.” It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

The Joshua / Jack Project: A Recipe for Success!

Several weeks back I was sitting at home and watching the movie : ‘Julie/Julia’ – If you’ve seen this movie, or read the book, then you’re probably guessing where this might be going… A few days later I received the inspiration to do my own blog similar to Julie’s, however with my own ‘Passions’, which you may be happy to know don’t include cooking! – (my family is anyway) So what was I going to blog about? I enjoy teaching, writing, and learning so how can I use that in an On-Purpose way?

It took only a few minutes and I had the answer! A few months ago I was selected to participate in a year long mentorship program with none other than Jack Canfield – of ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’, ‘The Secret’, and the book which this blog will be based off of; ‘The Success Principles’. I decided that this was the perfect place to start – I would use his book – the one which I am going to be training others on – and walk my own talk. What a great way to start 2010 and to kickoff my training seminars based off of Jack Canfield’s work and his Success Principles.

My Condition – Please Read, It May Effect You!

My Condition
I have a condition; I probably should have let you know about it a while ago since it’s highly contagious.
It’s been known to transmit to people in various ways… Over the telephone, through books, pictures, and even through thoughts and words.
I caught it many years ago and believe it was transmitted to be at birth. I have done my best to hide from it, but somehow it just keeps coming back.
There are times I even forget about it, but it always finds a way to remind me that it’s there.
It may seem selfish to you, but I’m actually happy that I exposed you to it. The way I see it, the more the better, and then I’m not alone!
I have found ways to deal with my condition, the first of which was to accept and embrace it as a part of me.
The next was to take an active role in it’s growth within me, rather than sitting back and letting it drive.
It’s probably a good idea for you to learn more about it since you’ve been exposed to it now; ignorance at this point is not the right answer.
Be sure to spend some time each day and learn new ways in which you can use it in your life, I have found it is possible to co-exist with my condition, and you will too.
I know what you’re wondering and no, I haven’t found any medical cure for it, however I have discovered that it in itself cures many ailments that medicine hasn’t been able to.
I haven’t found the secret to hiding it from others, but I have found there are others out there living with it that are always willing to lend a hand and help out when I need it.
Now I know this can seem scary to you, but let me assure you, it’s nothing to be afraid of, you’ll do just fine. In fact, I’m confident it’s exactly what you’ve been looking for!

Overcoming the Need for Perfection

How often are you paralyzed by perfection, when the desire to do something perfect keeps you from ever doing it at all? Do you have a book to write? A picture to paint? How about a new career move or great invention on the back burner? For most of us there are at least a few things in our lives that we never take action on. Here are just a few of the excuses we use to justify our position – These may sound familiar to you.
Excuse 1 – I’m waiting for just the right moment.
Excuse 2 – I don’t know enough about it yet to move forward.
Excuse 3 – I can’t think of the right way to say it.
Excuse 4 – It won’t be right anyway so why bother doing it.
How many of these have you used before? Got any other favorites? Even though these excuses sound different, essentially they all boil down to the same symptom, a need for perfection.
So what is the perfection you seek anyway? Is it fair to say that rather than seeking perfection, you’re really just creating an elaborate and seemingly unsurpassable excuse to keep you from moving ahead? We have heard it said countless times that perfection doesn’t exist, yet we still strive for this quality in much of what we do. Are we setting ourselves up on purpose?
If we truly believe that perfection doesn’t exist, yet we use it as a tool in which to measure things by, then we’ll never add up and won’t meet our own expectations. Essentially we set ourselves up for failure before we even begin. This condition is then recognized by our egos, and our internal protector then steps in to keep us from making progress towards whatever it may be, even if it’s a life long dream or passion.
So how can we overcome this obstacle? Let’s try looking at it from another perspective. Consider that everything you do is in fact perfect. No matter which direction you go, whether you win, lose, succeed, or fail, it’s all perfect. How would this mindset effect the actions you take? Would it no longer matter whether it was the ideal situation? Would being ‘right’ no longer hold you hostage? Chances are you just might take on some new challenges and obstacles that could open up a whole new world of possibility for you. It may even remove the self-imposed limits that currently define your beliefs.
What happens if you take action and discover you’re not really where you wanted to be or envisioned being? Simply re-direct yourself and keep moving. It’s that simple, you’re never stuck, you’re only temporarily in that spot, move onwards and upwards. Don’t spend time there beating yourself up about it, accept it as perfect based upon what you knew when you made the decision, and then make another decision based upon your new level of knowledge. Who knows, you might just learn something in the process.
Now, the next time you’re faced with a situation where perfection becomes your threshold for action, remember to take action anyway, and know that no matter which direction you go, it’s all perfect.

Do I have to change jobs to live out my purpose?

Many people fear the search for purpose primarily because of the possibilites that may arise once they discover what they’re here to do. Most people usually know when they’re in the wrong career and may have known it for years, yet fear the changes that would arise if they had to do something about it.

What some people don’t consider however, is that they can possibly shuffle around some responsibilities in order to make their current job more purposeful for them. In your current job you may just find that there are pieces of it that you enjoy more than others and that you most likely excel at above that of your peers. In the same way many of your co-workers may also excel at tasks in which you struggle.

A growing trend for many startup and more progressive companies is to use a ’strengths based’ or ‘talent based’ approach to job responsibilities. Research has shown that this type of approach can lead to both higher levels of productivity and profit along with an increase in employee job satisfaction and loyalty.

The bottom line is to try and find ways that you can harness your strengths and passions in your current role before considering a move into another job or career. Talk to your current employer and see if you can leverage those talents in other areas before making the decision to jump ship and start over. Who Knows? You may just start a new trend in your workplace that will benefit everyone!

The Conscious Creation of Dreams Explained (Part 2)

In my last article we discussed how the process of ‘dream seeding’ allows you to plant seeds in the abundant soil of the Universe and reap the benefits of the unbounded knowledge found there.  The idea is for you to place a problem, question or other situation into the Universal Mind and trust that what you need will be on its way immediately to you.

The basis of the technique I utilize both in my practice and personally was derived from the work of Deepak Chopra and other mentors I have studied, however I have modified and added pieces based upon personal experience.  The biggest challenge you will face is to stick with it even during those days or weeks when you feel as though you may not be making any progress. I encourage you to take this as a model to learn from but understand that it’s not the only way. You may even decide to personalize this one, as I have done, and use the pieces that make the most sense for you in your life.

I suggest you start with something small at first and then as you get more practice you can up the ante and increase the complexity and number of questions you’re seeking answers to. It’s generally best to work with just one item at a time as you get started.

I’ll break it into a few simple and easy steps for you here to get you started…

I have found that it’s best to practice dream seeding when you know you will have at least 5-7 hours of continuous uninterrupted sleep, although I have seen results with much less. (New babies can cause the much less sleep I speak of!)

1. Locate a notebook, sketchbook or pad of paper that you will use as your new ‘dream journal’.
2. Come up with one question to a problem or dilemma that you’re currently facing on your journey to a more purposeful life and write it down. (This should be a single question, not a question on top of a question or a barrage of many ideas in one. It can be as simple as, ‘I want to know how I can best be of service to others.’)
3. Once you have your question written down in your dream journal place it on your nightstand or next to your bed on the floor along with a pen or pencil and possibly a book light or flashlight.
4. As you prepare for bed read the single question you have written in your journal aloud several times and try and commit it to memory. (This is why it’s best that your question is kept simple and short.) Your objective is to have this question on your mind right as you drift off to sleep.
5. As you’re lying in bed say something similar to the following; ‘Tonight I would like to know (insert your question). I release this question into the Universe and ask that I remember the answer when I wake up in a way that I can immediately understand.’
6. Go to sleep…..

Okay… believe it or not, that was the easy part, the actual planting of the seed. Now I will give you a few more items that will make this journey a success, and that are equally important in this process.

When you wake up in the morning, even if it’s at 2a.m., write in your journal anything that you can remember about your dreams. Try to capture every detail down to the colors, smells, feelings, images and words. You may find that once you write the main idea, others immediately pop into your head, just keep writing until there’s nothing left that you can remember.

It is extremely important that you do this while in bed and that you don’t jar yourself too much or move to another location if at all possible. Also, use your flashlight rather than turning on the room light (your spouse will also appreciate this!).

Again, I can’t stress enough how important it is that you do this immediately upon waking up before doing anything else, even using the restroom! No matter how strong the mental image is when you wake up, these dreams can disappear back into the unconscious mind before you know it leaving you frustrated and unable to recall any details.

Don’t become upset or feel that you did something wrong if when you wake up you don’t remember anything about the dreams you had that night. Also don’t become angry at yourself or the process if you either forget, or don’t have the complete picture you were expecting. The dreams may not seem complete when you start this process, however as you progress you will learn the best questions to ask to get the more complete picture of what you’re truly seeking.

Finally, I recommend that you don’t put too much pressure on yourself to get it all perfect, just experiment with it and find the way that it works best for you. Your dreams are your playground, enjoy the journey!
